Stamm et al. reported (Pinene-Based Oxidative Synthetic Toolbox for Scalable Polyester Synthesis) the synthesis of HHDC via oxidative cleavage of the (−)-α-pinene double bond, originally described by Tolstikov et al. The product was obtained as a transparent oil in 65% yield after column chromatography; the originally reported yield of 83% was obtained without purification, which may account for the difference. Reaction scale was not stated.
